May 17, 2009 program to be announced
Five years ago on May 17, 2004 the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site first opened its doors to the public as part of a coast-to-coast commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the United States Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education. Since its grand opening tens of thousands have visited including people from over twenty countries around the globe. In 1990 the Brown Foundation set out to preserve a tangible reminder of this significant court decision and to find a way of making this history accessible to students at every level, scholars, media, and the general public. This effort resulted in the passage of the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site Act of 1992. Signed into law on October 26, 1992.
May 17, 2009 will mark the 55th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision that we commemorate annually because it forever changed the national dialogue about race relations and the international dialogue about human rights. Brown v. Board of Education provided definitive interpretation of the 14th Amendment of the Constitution and dismantled the legal framework for racial segregation in the United States.
